MIT Building E1

Assignment:

Replace obsolete steam absorption chiller-heaters and pumping system providing unreliable source of building chilled water.

Challenges:

Provide campus chilled water for building cooling without disturbing exterior landscape of building.  Connect campus chilled water to existing chilled water distribution system building without creating potential pipe rupture in existing concealed piping pathways throughout historic structure.

Implementation:

To avoid trenching exterior landscape and sidewalks, new design employed directionally-drilled underground primary chilled water service from campus chilled water distribution system.  Utilized water-to-water heat exchanger to isolate existing low pressure piping systems from high primary-side service pressures. To provide reliability, new system utilized base and standby secondary pumping, variable speed drives, with provisions for chemical treatment and air/water separation.
